United Methodist Women

Happy New Year! 2019 is Full of New Beginnings While preparing for our annual church conference last fall, we were asked to fill out a form. One of the questions asked was, “Do we have a plan for making disciples?” At that time the church did not have an organized plan. Recently the church has started asking varied people to read scripture during worship service, as well as asking for volunteers to be greeters on Sunday morning as part of beginning ways to make disciples.
We as United Methodist Women have a big part in the church missions and many exciting opportunities to make disciples. On Wednesday, January 16 at 6:30 pm, we ladies met at Sylvia Day's house for coffee and dessert and our first 2019 meeting to discuss ways to make disciples. We reviewed the missions we are currently doing and decided whether we should try something new in 2019. Our existing activities are the Cpl. Kyle R. Schneider Foundation, providing veterans with food gift cards for different occasions, the mitten tree, shawls, donations to veterinary and animal hospitals, and the New to You Schoolhouse Boutique. We are in the process of organizing a community coat giveaway. We had much to discuss and plan for this new year.
Don Day was invited to be an honorary ‘lady’ for this meeting as he helps the UMW and needs to be aware of our missions and goals. Devotions and prayers were then given. The meeting was called to order by President Carolyn Johnson. Reports were read and approved and various details were then discussed and voted on and approved including the continuation of helping the Schneider Foundation as one of our main goals and will continue with the shawls, mittens and hat Christmas tree, lap robes and food gift cards at special occasions.
The New to You clothing sale has some nice prom dresses for sale so we are checking with a local school to see if they still have a dress giveaway to students with a need and if they do, we will vote to have this as a new mission or not. Everyone thought this was a good way to be God's Disciples.
Going back to the original question, “Do we have a plan for making disciples?” The UMW have a big role in meeting this assignment. After a lot of prayer and devotions, we put our confidence in Christ. With his wisdom and guidance, all things are possible. With our Christ candle lit, and feeling God's spirit within each of us, we came up with many new ideas that were voted on and approved.
We welcome ALL volunteers and praise God that we can continue this mission for our community and our church. FYI – the UMW paid 1/3 of the church expenses in 2018. I am so proud of all our hard work and our volunteers and the work we do for the community. We are all thankful that God's path for us is to help many people. We are a dedicated bunch of ladies – and men – and with God's help 2019 will be even better!
With Gods Blessing,
Carolyn Johnson, UMW President
